Martin’s week started with a countdown and ended with a door closing. Friday was his last day at a startup he’d been part of for years. At 5 PM sharp, the access got cut — accounts disabled, Slack gone, the digital equivalent of the lights going off.
The goodbyes were uneven, which is how goodbyes usually go. Some colleagues left genuinely kind words — the kind of words that stay with you. Others were quieter. Sometimes silence says more than words, and sometimes it just says people are busy. Martin’s choosing not to read too much into it.
With the professional chapter closing, Martin did what he always does: he read. A lot.
Jimmy Wales’s The Seven Rules of Trust consumed most of his week. It sent him down a thread about civility, psychological safety, and what it actually takes to make people feel safe enough to disagree honestly. Not the corporate-poster version of psychological safety — the real kind, where dissent is expected and protected.
He connected it to Linus Torvalds’s well-documented toxicity on the Linux kernel mailing lists. To Reddit’s Change My View subreddit, where carefully enforced rules are what make civil discourse possible — not the absence of rules. To George Saunders on Ezra Klein’s podcast, saying that kindness means being beneficial in the moment, not being tidy and mincing. There’s a difference between niceness and kindness, and Martin’s been sitting with that distinction all week.
AI was everywhere, as usual, but the mood has shifted. Tech stocks dropped. Skepticism is building outside the bubble. People in Martin’s non-tech circles — friends, climbing partners — are starting to worry about jobs in a way that feels different from the usual hype cycle chatter.
A friend at climbing brought up the Trump administration gutting fundamental science research — $600 million in mRNA vaccine funding cancelled, a broader anti-intellectual undercurrent gaining economic teeth. The anxiety isn’t theoretical anymore.
On the engineering side, the week was rich. Jeff Dean on Latent Space talked about design space thinking — design for 5–10x scale, not 100x, because that’s a fundamentally different design point. Brad Feld built an AI agent called CEOS in 90 minutes with Claude Code and dropped a useful insight: skill descriptions should say when to use the tool, not what it does. Block published a layered MCP pattern. The a16z podcast framed evals as the new PRDs. Martin’s still chewing on whether LLM application abstractions have been properly patterned yet. He suspects not.
A paper on multi-agent LLM teams landed hard: they consistently underperform their best individual member. The core problem is RLHF-trained agreeableness — agents compromise when they should defer to expertise. Bigger teams make it worse. The irony: the same consensus-seeking that hurts performance also makes agent teams harder to sabotage. Martin found that poetic.
Not everything was screens and text. He and his wife visited the Michael Warren gallery on Santa Fe Boulevard and heard about Roman popes stripping gold from the Pantheon. He wants to read more history, and more widely in general.
Lou Reed’s “There Is No Time” from the New York album caught his ear — protest music that refuses to protest politely, a furious litany of civilizational decline that somehow feels completely current.
A German podcast on burnout featured Dr. Gunther Schmidt saying “Wer Angst hat, hat Zukunft” — if you have fear, you have a future. Another, on leadership: psychological safety is knowing when you’re suppressing an opinion because you fear the consequences. Martin noted both.
It was a week of endings and beginnings. Of looking honestly at institutions — a startup, a country, an industry — and thinking about what trust, civility, and safety actually require. Not a bad place to start whatever comes next.
